Chapter Five

Soft, rich notes and a voice smooth as silk filled Josiah’s ears

when he entered the Aames’ house for the first time in three

years. If he wasn’t mistaken it was Blue Christmas by Elvis. Mama

had always loved that song, anything by the late, great Elvis the

Pelvis really. It was so different from the Christmas crap played

at the diner. How could anyone think techno or rap was the way

to go in a song about a silent night or a sleigh ride? He was

pleased to see the house wasn’t over-decorated either, just a real

Christmas tree strung with popcorn and homemade ornaments

sitting in the corner by the front window. The place was homey

and real, nothing fussy or perfect about it, but in Josiah’s eyes it

was exactly that.

He was stomping the snow off his boots and bending over to

take them off when a high-pitched yell made him look up.

“Ah ha! I knew I’d catch you under the mistletoe,” the voice

of a young woman called from the next room.

Wyatt clucked his tongue and shook his head from his

position beside Josiah. “Hard to not catch him when the damn

stuff is right above the door. Wanna kiss me, too, sis?”

Tammy-Jo Aames bounced into the room, long hair flying

over her shoulders, arms stretched out in front of her as she

pounced on Josiah and planted a sloppy wet one on his cheek.

“’Bout time you showed up. Thought you boys got lost in the

barn,” she teased, ruffling the top of Josiah’s head. “I told Wyatt

that he’s not allowed to keep you all to himself, at least not at

first.”

Josiah felt his cheeks redden, his eyes flicking away from the

excited girl and back again. “We were just um…catching up.”

Tammy-Jo’s smile was huge. “Is that what you boys call it?”

“Tammy-Jo!” Flora Aames yelled from the kitchen. “Stop

mauling Josiah and get your lazy butt in here and help me.”

“But ma,” the young lady whined. “I’ve gotta go check on

Britney-Jo.”

“Britney-Jo?” Josiah repeated.

Wyatt smirked. “Oh yeah, I didn’t tell you. Tammy’s got

herself a baby now. Cute little thing, not sure it’s really hers.”

Tammy-Jo stuck out her tongue at her younger brother, kissed

Josiah once more and raced back down the hall. Josiah knew she

had to be at least twenty-four but she still looked and acted like

the energized teenager she’d always been. She’d taken a liking to

him when she was a teen, despite the difference in their ages, but

Wyatt had clued her in to the fact that his friends were not for

sharing. Josiah had never been sure what that meant.

“She married?” he asked, unsure whether the question was

rude or not.

“Almost,” Mrs. Aames answered as she came around the

corner and wrapped her much-bigger son in a hug. “Wedding’s

gonna be this summer.”

“Yeah,” Wyatt said. “She actually found someone dumb

enough to put up with her.”

“I resent that remark,” a deep voice replied. Josiah was

wondering just how many people were going to be at Christmas

dinner but he managed to stifle the urge to run back to the house.

“Hi. I’m Martin. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Josiah flinched at the statement, plastering a smile on his

face and casually looking the man up and down.
